Hannah Weichbrodt ’13
What has your career path looked like since graduating from Covenant?
I was a history and community development double major and thought I wanted to do more economic development. After my internship [at The Chalmers Center], I decided I was more interested in systemic changes, which pushed me more towards the path of law school. I took a year off between undergrad and law school and interned with International Justice Mission in India doing anti-bonded labor work, which really helped me see a lot of the impact immigration and systemic change in the legal systems could make. After that, I went to law school and graduated from Columbia Law School in New York. I worked for a couple of years at a large law firm doing corporate international work in both New York and Paris, but really was most interested in immigration. After about four years there, I eventually came to my current role.
Looking back now, how did Covenant prepare you for doctoral work and your career?
In law school, I felt really prepared for the really intense and rigorous academic environment. At Covenant, I was forced to understand how I learned, which is really important and something that many of my peers [in law school] didn't have. Also, in the [grad school] application process, I had close connections with the professors that I went to school with who could write me good, knowledgeable, and personable letters of recommendation that helped me stand out as a candidate.
Why did you choose Covenant?
I was really pulled by the community development and history majors, which I ended up studying, and I also played soccer at Covenant. I really wanted to go somewhere where I could play the sport that I loved, but also have a really great education.
What are some fond memories or a favorite story from your time at Covenant?
Some of my fondest memories are from my hall. I think one of my favorite memories was when we decided that we all needed overalls and then wore overalls once a week to get dinner together. I had a reunion with three of them last year. The bonds that have lasted have been amazing.
