Year 1

You will explore the fundamental elements of civil engineering in relation to business, society and the sustainability of the built and natural environment.

You will also undertake a group project linked to the Engineering for People Design Challenge.

Year 2

You’ll study more specialist structural elements in your second year, be introduced to digital technologies used in industry and gain computer programming and 2D/3D modelling skills.

Group project work will include designing, building and testing a simple small-scale structure.

Placement year

A placement year offers an excellent opportunity to gain work experience, build a professional network, increase your confidence, develop existing skills and discover new ones. The experience also significantly enhances your CV.

There is also the opportunity to study abroad.

Year 3

The third year further cements your understanding of structural engineering. You’ll study the design of prestressed concrete – a practice that is increasingly vital in the design of modern buildings and bridges. 

You’ll take part in a multidisciplinary group design project designing a complete structure using a complex and incomplete client brief and adhering to best industry practice guidelines.

Final year

You’ll learn about types and causes of damage to existing structures and the various techniques used for strengthening them. Project work will include evaluating and designing the strengthening of a damaged structure. You’ll develop essential skills that are in demand, especially in countries prone to natural disasters like earthquakes.

You’ll undertake a major individual project and have the freedom to specialise in areas that interest you most through option modules.

Course fees

This course offers a professional placement (sandwich) year in year 3. If you choose to take this placement you will pay a reduced fee during this year. For students starting their undergraduate degree in the 2026–27 academic year, the fee for the professional placement year is £1,907 for all students. This fee may be subject to small increases in line with inflation.

The course fees shown here are what you will pay if you start your course in the academic year 2026–27 and you are studying full-time. You pay fees in each year of your course. The fees you pay may increase each year.

Regulated fees

Fees for UK students on undergraduate and some postgraduate courses are set by the UK government. These are known as regulated fees. The regulated fee for 2025–2026 is £9,535. The government has announced that regulated tuition fees will increase each year in line with forecast inflation from 2026–27 onwards. (Subject to parliamentary approval)

Student Finance England loans for tuition fees and maintenance will also rise in line with inflation.

If you are studying part-time your fee will usually be calculated based on the number of modules that you take.

Unregulated fees

Course fees for international students taking undergraduate courses and for most postgraduate courses are not regulated by the UK government. Unregulated fees may increase each year by up to 5% or the forecast Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation (whichever is higher).
