Our Psychology Conversion MSc introduces you to the core principles of psychology, including the biological basis of behaviour, cognitive psychology, and their real-world applications. 

You’ll study theoretical and methodological approaches in social psychology and the psychology of individual differences, and explore key theories and topics in child development and life-span development. 

You will learn about quantitative and qualitative research methods and take part in small-scale research projects to develop your skills in research design and data analysis.

You will also look at the psychological perspectives that underpin forensic psychology and, through studying cyberpsychology, learn how digital technologies are shaping, and are shaped by, psychological experience.

Throughout the course you will examine historical, social and cultural influences on the understandings of psychology.

Course structure

Typically, a week will consist of three two-hour lectures and three one-hour seminars or practical-based workshops on research skills, with the remainder of the week spent on independent study. 

There will also be a series of lectures and workshops and one-to-one supervision meetings throughout the year to support you with your psychology project. 

Through lectures and seminars you’ll explore and discuss key topics and take part in student presentations, workshops, debates, simulations and reading groups.

Every module has at least one formative assessment task and you will have the opportunity to try out different assessment types.

Modules

• Brain, Body and Cognition (Masters)

  This module provides you with the comprehensive knowledge and understanding of two core areas of psychology: biological and cognitive psychology. You will explore the biological basis of behaviour, including biological research methods and ethical issues, and look at classic and contemporary theory, research and real-world applications of cognitive processes and their underlying physiology. The module meets the British Psychological Society’s accreditation requirements.

• Forensic Psychology (Masters)

  Covering key areas of growth and development in forensic psychology, this module introduces you to a range of psychological perspectives within these areas. You’ll gain a deeper understanding of how psychology is applied in the forensic field, and the social and political context in which it operates. You will explore topics such as justice, expert testimony, witnesses, theories of offending behaviour and psychological assessment of what is most effective, valued and fair in practice and policy.

• Psychological Investigation (Masters)

  You will learn about quantitative and qualitative research methods in psychology, including advanced experimental design, multivariate analyses and qualitative research techniques. You will gain experience in small-scale research projects and develop skills in reviewing literature, research design, data collection, data analysis and writing reports. This module meets the British Psychological Society’s accreditation requirements for coverage and assessment of research methods in psychology.

• Cyberpsychology (Masters)

  You will look at some of the key contemporary debates about how interactive media technologies (such as mobile phones, video games, online games, interactive television) are shaping, and are shaped by, psychological experience such as communication, self and identity, relationships and health and wellbeing. You will be encouraged to reflect on your own use of interactive media and how this mediates your own psychological experience.

• Lifespan Development (Masters)

  Development extends beyond childhood, with change occurring from conception to old age. This module takes a critical stance when exploring broad areas of development (eg learning, relationships, identity) to understand the role of social, cultural and historical context in our past, present and future understanding of these areas. You will look at how psychological research methods advance our knowledge of lifespan development and analyse the evidence for development beyond childhood.

• Social Psychology and Individual Differences (Masters)

  This module introduces two core areas of psychology: social psychology and the psychology of individual differences. By exploring theory, research, ethical considerations and real-world applications, it addresses topics related to social, cultural, conceptual and historical issues concerned with our experiences in the social world and how these are influenced by dispositional factors. Core topics will be introduced that seek to explain human behaviour and differences in a social environment.

• Psychology Project (Masters)

  This module will enable you to initiate, design, conduct, analyse, interpret and report an empirical research study under supervision. As well as a series of lectures, workshops and specially designed online resources, you will attend tutorials which guide extensive independent study culminating in a research report. The module meets the British Psychological Society’s accreditation requirements for completion of an empirical dissertation project.

The Psychology Project module enables you to design, conduct, analyse and interpret a research study relevant to psychological literature. You will have one-to-one supervision with a lecturer in the psychology team, who will guide your independent study and provide support with writing your research report.

Our modules and the topics covered are designed to demonstrate that you are attaining the necessary breadth and depth in the British Psychological Society Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership (GBC) curriculum areas. The GBC curriculum includes:

• biological psychology
• cognitive psychology
• developmental psychology
• individual differences
• social psychology
• conceptual and historical issues in psychology
• research methods
• empirical project.

Although not a GBC curriculum topic, at 麻豆AV you will also benefit from studying forensic psychology and cyberpsychology.

Lab facilities

Mithras House has a series of lab spaces, which are used for teaching and student and staff research. 

VR and eye tracking lab
This lab is used for psychological research, specifically:

• eye-tracking research – eye-tracking (using an eye-tracking nano bar and eye-tracking glasses) is used to study visual attentional patterns across areas including CCTV observation and analysis, marketing and advertising research, and police and offender perceptions

• virtual reality research – VR allows participants to immerse themselves in virtual environments, so that researchers can study typically impractical situations. Research areas include the effects of virtual interactions, phobias, wellbeing, meditation, and city architecture

• measuring physiological responses within participants in response to external stimuli – equipment includes an electroencephalography (EEG) headset and Electrodermal Activity (EDA) equipment.

The space has adjustable lighting and a blackout blind for maintaining consistent lighting conditions during eye-tracking research, as well as sensors set up in the room to allow individuals to move freely around the room during virtual reality research.

Stats lab
The Stats Lab is a specialist workspace for carrying out statistical analysis, and video and audio editing projects. The Stats Lab is also used for workshops, demonstrations and seminars and can be used by students as a study space.

Applied cognition lab
A dedicated research space for psychological research involving measures such as electrodermal activity (EDA) and electroencephalography (EEG). The space is designed to allow the participant and researcher to sit at separate desks whilst psychophysiological data is being collected. 

Life lab
The Life lab is fitted with lounge furniture to provide a comfortable space for conducting qualitative research with larger groups. The lab can be used to conduct research activities with children of all ages and can be used for meetings and events. The room also contains a dedicated space to conduct assessed role play or interviews with children.

City lab
This is a qualitative research methods and creative methods resource for all students, staff and researchers, as well as research participants, including children, community groups and the general public. It can also be used for a range of meetings and events. The City lab contains a kitchen, a teaching/meeting room with enhanced acoustic isolation and two meeting spaces that can be separated with a screen or combined to accommodate larger groups.

Meet the team

Dr Julie Morgan, course leader

Dr Julie Morgan joined the 麻豆AV as a psychology lecturer in 2011. She teaches across a range of both undergraduate and postgraduate modules in psychology, covering areas including cognition, social psychology, individual differences, research methods and cyberpsychology.

Julie’s research interests broadly focus on aspects of applied social cognition and mental health. Her work has included research projects on social anxiety, autobiographical memory and rumination. More recently, she has a growing interest in how people experience and regulate their online selves and the effects of social media on mental health.

The fees listed here are for the first year of full-time study if you start your course in the academic year 2026–27.

You will pay fees for each year of your course. Some fees may increase each year.

UK undergraduate and some postgraduate fees are regulated by the UK government and increases will not be more than the maximum amount allowed. Course fees that are not regulated may increase each year by up to 5% or the Consumer Price Index (RPI), whichever is higher.

If you are studying part-time your fee will usually be calculated based on the number of modules that you take.
